Suspected car thief shot by apartment resident

Apartment residents caught a would-be thief on security cameras, confronted the thief and shot him. He is in serious condition.

SAN ANTONIO - A would-be car thief was shot by an apartment resident early Tuesday morning.

It started at the Veranda Apartments on Jones Maltsberger near Sunset on the north side.

People living at the apartments told police they had been hit by thieves several times. One neighbor installed a security system in his car that alerted him if a thief was trying to get into the vehicle.

Around 3:00 a.m., the security system went off and that resident went outside, confronted a man breaking into his car, and shot him.

The suspect took off, but only got as far as a Walmart near the area. Police say he asked for help at the Walmart and was taken by ambulance to SAMMC.

The suspect is in serious condition.

Police say the apartment resident who shot him will not face any charges.
