Earlier this week, the Bexar County Sheriff's Department released video of a person of interest in a child sex assault case. However, BCSO tells KENS 5 someone has come forward, but the person hasn't been cleared or charged in the case.
On Thursday, November 10, 2016, the child and his mother were shopping at a store in the 6200 block of Glen Wood in northeast Bexar County. Police said the child went to use the bathroom and was in a locked stall when the suspect entered the stall and sexually assaulted the child.
Randy McGibeny, with the non-profit ChildSafe, said child sex assault cases involving a stranger don't happen frequently.
"Probably, seven-percent of cases are going to be a result of stranger-danger issues, but that doesn't mean you should allow your children particularly young children to walk into restrooms by themselves," he said.
McGibeny said parents need to always be on alert.
"Most of these incidents aren't going to happen in public spaces where you have this stranger-danger issue," he said.
He said parent's shouldn't send their child alone and have a pack mentality. He said send a group of children together.
"Now, that might not deter a predator to what they are going to do," he said. "If they are going to expose themselves, they are going to make an attempt to sexually assault a child they are going to find a way to get it done. But I would feel more comfortable if I had pack mentality if I was sending my child to the restroom then if I just send them in by themsleves."
ChildSafe typically handles cases given to them by law enforcement. They have services available such as counseling for the families.
The Sheriff’s Department did not name the store where the sexual assault happened but surveillance video shows a person of interest in what appears to be a Ross clothing store. BCSO plans to release more info as it becomes available.
