Giving flowers makes you happy, survey says

Pedal it forward

SAN ANTONIO -- It's a statement that might make you go, 'duh.’ Giving and receiving flowers makes people happy.

Well, not only have many people thought that to be the case for years, but a survey by the Society of American Florists proves it.

Of the more than 2,500 people to respond, 80 percent said getting flowers makes them happy, 88 percent said giving flowers makes them happy and 76 percent said having flowers in their home improves their mood.

Deborah Gonzales owns Oakleaf Florist in San Antonio. She hit the streets Wednesday morning to give out free flowers to celebrate the survey's findings.

"One condition," she told a passing motorist. "We're giving you two, you have to give one away."

Her shop is coming up on its 25th anniversary. She always knew giving and getting flowers made people happy, but she said it is nice to have this survey to back it up.

"It's good for us. It makes you feel loved and appreciated, and that's what everyone needs these days."
