SAN ANTONIO – A man has been arrested for murder Wednesday following a SWAT situation in northwest San Antonio that developed from a shooting.
The victim, 22-year-old Steven Salas, arrived at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital at Westover Hills suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was then transported to University Hospital where police said he died around 6 a.m.
Police were able to gather information from the hospital that led them to the suspect, 31-year-old Kristopher Lucero, in the 10000 block of Woodtrail around 9 a.m.
Because Lucero had been convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon last year, police said they deployed SWAT team members as a precaution.
An individual at the scene was able to speak with the Lucero on a phone and convinced him to surrender to police peacefully around 11 a.m.
Three elementary schools were on a modified lockdown during the incident, Barry Perez, Executive Director of Communications with NISD said.
Perez said the lockdown was lifted around 11:15 a.m. for Burke Elementary School, Northwest Crossing Elementary School, and Brauchle Elementary School.
Police said the shooting escalated from an argument between Lucero and Salas over numerous relationships the victim was involved in.
Lucero has been charged with murder.
