SAN ANTONIO - A fire all but destroyed an apartment building Wednesday morning sending seven people scrambling for safety. One victim needed extra help from police officers to get to safety.

"It's one of those things we're going to do what we do to save lives," Officer Emilio De La Rosa said.

The fire started at a two-story apartment complex that was once a house in the 600 block of Riverside Dr.

A tenant woke up to smoke and a crackling sound in the wall. Fire investigators said there were no smoke detectors.

When officers Michael Brewer and De La Rosa arrived on the scene, the complex was being engulfed by intense flames.

The officers noticed a woman stuck on top of a carport attached to the burning building. Brewer asked the woman to come down. She agreed but didn't move.

According to the 29-year-old officer, he parked his police cruiser next to the burning building, climbed onto the roof of the vehicle with De La Rosa's help and got the woman down safely.

"My total focus was getting her off the building," Brewer said. "I wanted to make sure she was secure. She was fine."

Brewer, a nearly two year veteran of SAPD, said the fire victim stayed up on the carport roof too long for him.

"We had to go get her down," he said.

On the street since December 2016, rookie cop De La Rosa knocked on doors to get other tenants out.

Fire investigators said the cause of the fire is electrical in nature and started on the second story of the   complex inside the walls.

The damage is estimated at $50,000.

There were no injuries thanks to two officers who said this was just another day at the office.
