SAPD: Officer shot, suspect killed in struggle for gun on northeast side

An officer was wounded and a 31-year-old San Antonio man was killed in a struggle over a gun late Friday evening, police say.

SAN ANTONIO -- An officer was wounded and a 32-year-old San Antonio man was killed in a struggle over a gun late Friday evening, police say.

The deceased has been identified as Christopher Fredette.

The officer, who was later identified as Joshua Connell, was shot in the leg in the front yard of a house in the 5100 block of Galahad Drive, near Ray Bon Drive on San Antonio's northeast side.

San Antonio police told KENS 5's Dillon Collier that officers was called to the residence for a family disturbance. The suspect was reportedly arguing with his father.

Once under arrest, Fredette allegedly pulled out a gun as two officers attempted to pat him down.

Investigators said the two officers and the suspect fought over the gun. During the struggle, the suspect grabbed the weapon and fired several shots, hitting one of the officers in the leg.

A third officer who was inside the home came out and fired at the suspect, killing him.

KENS 5's Dillon Collier said the injured officer appeared to be sitting up and alert in the back of an ambulance. He was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Streets were closed off at the 5100 block of Galahad Drive near Walzem Road due to the investigation.
