SAPD: Off-duty officer drives into sinkhole

An off-duty SAPD officer climbed out of a sinkhole near South Lion's Park after he drove into it Friday morning

SAN ANTONIO - An off-duty San Antonio police officer's drive home from work came with an unexpected road hazard. He drove into a sinkhole in a park.

Sgt. Marshall Campbell said the incident happened before 6:30 a.m. in the 3100 block of Hiawatha at Southside Lion's Park.

The officer who works the overnight shift with SAPD cut through the park on a paved drive used by motorists and pedestrians. Campbell said the officer thought he was driving over mud puddle until his truck dropped into a huge sinkhole.

The officer was able to climb out without injury. A wrecker pulled the policeman's vehicle from the sinkhole.

Officers believe the sinkhole was caused by a water main break. SAWS was at the park working on the water main break that caused street-level flooding in the 600 block of Kasmuir right next to the park.
