SAPD: Man steals nearly nine tons of copper worth $34,000

SAN ANTONIO – A man was arrested for allegedly stealing over $34,000 of dollars’ worth of copper from past and present employers, according to authorities.

Investigators had been monitoring 37-year-old Mario Villalobos whom they suspected was stealing the copper. Surveillance videos captured and identified Villalobos stealing the metal from the heating and air conditioning companies he worked for, according to the affidavit.

On April 27 during interviews with investigators, Villalobos admitted to stealing the copper from one employer since 2012 and the second employer in April of 2017. When investigators asked why he stole the metal, Villalobos stated he stole from the first employer because he was not paid adequately for his work.

The total weight of copper taken from 2015 to 2017 equated to 17,622 pounds with 185 transactions made. According to the affidavit, Villalobos collected approximately $34,000.

Villalobos was charged with theft of property.
