SAPD: 3rd suspect in SE-side murder 'good friend' of victim, mastermind in plot

A third arrest has been made in a murder that took place during a robbery in southeast San Antonio back in August.

Police said that 21-year-old Zachary Vargas was not only a 'good friend' of the victim but also orchestrated the entire event.

"He told these guys to target his friend and even provided them with the weapon," said Sgt. Jesse Salame with the San Antonio Police Department.

Police said that on August 2 20-year-old Darnell Lee and 22-year-old Juan Mendez attempted to rob 19-year-old Brandon Pizana at his home on the 200 block of Montrose Street.

Pizana managed to wrestle one gun away but he was shot by a second gun, according to police.

Police said Vargas was the getaway driver in the incident, as well as the 'setup man' for the murder.

Vargas has been charged with capital murder. Police said they believe this is the third and final arrest.
