San Antonio Humane Society to compete in "friendly" dog tournament

The San Antonio Humane Society is one of 32 shelters around the nation participating in the 4th annual Tournament of Tails.

It's a March Madness themed contest presented by Petplan insurance. The tournament will donate to the charities of each winner’s choice. Organizers plan to distribute nearly $11,000 to animal shelters around the country.

The four-week tournament will feature “friendly matches” online between dogs from shelters around the nation. The dog with the most votes per round will advance to the next bracket. Each matchup will last only one day and spectators can easily cast their votes online.

A champion will be chosen on April 4th. Check out last year's champ.

Each pet will get something for participating. Animals that make it through the first round will get $100 toward their favorite shelter. That number goes up by 100 for each round. Pets that make it to the “Final Fur” round will get $500. As for the grand champion, he or she will a whopping $5,000 toward the charity of their choice.
