Photo contest motivates kids to learn about nature

Nature Photography Contest

SAN ANTONIO -- Some lucky child will win $300 in a local nature photography contest.

The contest, Picture Your World, is open to children ages eight to 18 and it runs through May.

It’s sponsored by Green Spaces Alliance, and the goal of the program is to get kids outside and motivated to learn more about nature.

"I've been in Picture Your World nine years," Douglas Rignon said.

He said he returns year after year because he is always able to learn something new.

“I consider myself a flower photographer,” Rignon said, explaining that the program has allowed him to visit and photograph many stunning local settings.

Every month the organization has been sponsoring photography workshops at parks and natural areas around town.

Adult photographers and volunteers from the local Master Naturalist organization are on hand to teach the kids about both technology and the wonder of nature.

About 25 kids participated in a recent workshop at the Japanese Tea Garden.

“Probably out of all, I like the flowers and fish the best,” Nine-year-old Evelyn Stubbs said.

“This is a great workshop!  I mean macro is a whole different world and it’s a really cool and awesome hobby to have,” Dylan Corso said.

Rebekah Warnick said she was pleasantly surprised to see other teens in the program. She said she thought she would be surrounded by little kids.

“I thought I was the only one in my age group but there are a lot more kids that I thought there would be,” she said.

Warnick said she comes from a family of photographers and considers the things she is learning know to be a part of a life-long hobby that is a lot of fun.

“I learned how to take pictures close up and it was good to be immersed in nature and take pictures of whatever we wanted.”

Warnick said she liked the experience so much, she plans to participate in future workshops.

The next workshop is scheduled for Jan. 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the Cibolo Nature Center in Boerne.
