SAN ANTONIO - Honor Flight San Antonio is a nonprofit aimed at bringing veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials of the conflicts they served. They're looking for volunteers in the San Antonio area to help fulfill their mission.

Retired Army Major James David did three tours in Vietnam and is also a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Four months ago, Davis made the trip of a lifetime to Washington D.C. with Honor Flight San Antonio to visit the memorials of those wars.

"I wanted to go and visit Arlington,” he said. “With my tours in Vietnam and being in a command position and everything, we lost a lot of people.”

Honor Flight San Antonio takes two trips a year, bringing veterans to our nation's capital for free. The group organizes a send-off and welcome home at the airport too. For many veterans, it's recognition of their service that they say they didn't get when they came home.

"People would clap and cheer and salute and wave flags and everything,” Davis recalled. “To me, it was something so different than the attitude that people had when we came home from Vietnam and Korea.”

Davis says that when he finally got a chance to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, he was overcome with emotion.

"It would take a lot of time to look up all the names. But instead of doing that, and it brought tears to my eyes and it still does when I think about it, what I did, I saluted the wall,” he said. “That's all I did because that way I honored all of them. It's hard for me to relive.”

The next Honor Flight San Antonio trip is scheduled for May 4 and will take 40 South Texas veterans to Washington D.C. If you're interested in volunteering, you can visit the official website here.
