SAN ANTONIO - State Senator Jose Menendez is calling on the Texas Education Agency to be more transparent and to look into possible criminal activity at Edgewood ISD.
Menendez sent a letter to the commissioner of education Mike Morath on Friday.
He expressed his concerns about the removal of a board member, Amanda Gonzalez, who was terminated and not given any reason for her removal.
The TEA appointed Gonzalez to serve as a board member more than a year ago when the TEA took over Edgewood ISD. The agency appointed five board members and a state conservator.
In the letter, Menendez asked for clarification on the official policy for removal, what training elected school board members underwent and what the TEA or superintendent’s role was in managing the board of managers.
Menendez also listed several criminal activity allegations he said occurred under the watch of the newly-appointed state board. The allegations include mishandled funds, operations of a private surveillance company run by a district employee and an investigation that was not approved.

Edgewood ISD sent us a statement in regards to the letter:
"The Edgewood Independent School District can confirm that allegations arose recently in regards to an employee within the District’s Police Department. The District swiftly took action to coordinate an investigation by an independent third party to protect the integrity of the probe. The individual immediately resigned upon the commencement of the investigation. The District was proactive in making sure all policies, laws, and regulations were strictly followed, as required. EISD will continue to examine allegations that arise in regards to any department or campus of the District and immediate action will be taken to protect the students, staff, and property of Edgewood ISD. In addition, the District will continue to adhere to the recommendations made by the Texas Education Agency (TEA)."
Menendez plans to meet with TEA officials, the district’s superintendent and the board of managers on Thursday.
