SAN ANTONIO -- 20 years ago, a music shop opened its doors on San Antonio's west side for the first time.
Some packages of guitar strings hung from a display and a couple of instruments were on the walls were the humble beginnings of Mariachi Connection, an Alamo City original that now serves musicians across the country.
"We sell Mariachi Uniforms, we also sell Ballet Folklorico attire which are the dresses, the Mexican dance dresses, instruments, a little bit of everything," said owner Josie Benavidez.
Her store is packed with merchandise now. There’s a room dedicated to instruments, walls lined with Trajes and a steady stream of customers coming in and out all day. One of them is Mariachi Gino Rivera.
"[Benavidez] always come through for everyone. It's been great and I don't think she'd have 20 years without that," Rivera said.
Rivera started playing Mariachi music at age 10, and started shopping at Mariachi Connection when he was 14.
"It's played a major role in all the Mariachis' life here allowing us to be that link to Mexico without having to go to Mexico," Rivera said.
Benavidez said she's looking forward to the celebration on Saturday, Sept. 14.
"I just want to say thank you to everyone for supporting the mariachi connection, 20 years is a long time," she said.
