SAN ANTONIO - A man stabbed over 15 times Sunday night on the city’s south side is now dead, police said.

Police were called to the scene around 11:40 p.m. in the 1000 block of Vermont Street, just two blocks west of Interstate 35 South.

When they got to the scene police discovered a Hispanic male laid out on the sidewalk covered in blood. Police said he suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest and appeared to be in between the ages of 50 and 60.

The victim was transported to University Hospital where he later died.

SAPD said they’re not sure how the victim ended up at that location and they spoke with the residents of the nearby home. Neighbors told police they would have heard dogs barking if there was any kind of commotion and they didn’t recall hearing any sort of struggle outside.

SAPD said they are looking for blood trails or any other indicators that can help them piece together what happened.

The medical examiner is working on an identification of the victim.
