SAN ANTONIO - Making sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos is quick and easy, according to art teacher, Carla Avila-Gray.
She teaches fifth grade at Round Rock Elementary and has a simple process that she says even a child can complete.
Ingredients: 1 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of meringue powder, and 1 teaspoon water.
You will also need a large bowl, small piece of cardboard and a skull mold, which can be purchased from Amazon or Michaels. Small skulls can be made with skull ice trays, which can be purchased from Dollar General or Amazon.
Step 1: Spray Pam into the skull molds. One layer should last the whole skull-making session.
Step 2: Combine the sugar, meringue powder and water in a bowl.
Step 3: Work the mixture with your hands until it sticks together.
Step 4: Place mixture in the mold with a piece of cardboard over it.
Leave the skull to dry overnight and then you can decorate using candy, sprinkles and icing.
