Family and friends of high school sweethearts Shani and Robert Corrigan paid their respects at a memorial service at First Baptist Church in La Vernia.

The couple was very involved at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, which is the place their lives would come to an end.

He was a retired Air Force veteran. On Sunday, men and women of the U.S. Air Force were among those at the service. They even helped those stay dry before walking into the church. His friends say he was a leader with a kind heart.

The couple fell in love at a Michigan high school and then moved back to Texas.

They have two sons on active duty.

Just down the road in China Grove, several volunteers were raising money for the families of Sutherland Springs. Fire Chief of China Grove Fire and Rescue, Mike Winfield, said right now it is all about faith.

"It is going back to God," he said. "We just have to reach out to him, and let him know we are here. And we are here to do his work."

Firefighters were at the fundraiser at the China Grove Trading Post. There was barbeque plates, music, and auction items. All the proceeds from the event will be going to the families. Owner Wendy Jenkins said it is unbelievable how many people have stepped up.

The love is just everywhere," she said.

Jenkins' grandchildren had a message to the families.

"Be strong and always have hope. "Never give up. "There is always going to be a bad and a good, but you have to be strong to reach that good."
