Locals celebrate Dia De Los Muertos

Local families honoring loved ones

SAN ANTONIO -- Maresa Rodriguez proudly showed KENS 5 where her grandparents, David and Jane Rodriguez are buried at San Fernando Cemetery.

"Dia de los Muertos," she said. "We celebrate the Day of the Dead.”

It’s a Mexican tradition for families to visit grave sites and add flowers as they pay homage to their loved ones. It runs from Oct.31 to Nov. 2 and is considered a celebration of life and involves caricatures of death and the eating of skull sugar molds.

Day of the Dead is a time when families don't fear death but enjoy and appreciate every moment.

Some believe that the souls of the departed return to earth to visit and give advice to family and loved ones.

It's a tradition the Rodriguez family is already passing along to 8-month-old Hazel Grace.

Wednesday is All Souls Day and there will be a mass held at San Fernando Cemetery II in the morning.
