Lawmakers introduce bill to allow EMS to carry guns

A Texas lawmaker wants paramedics to pack more than just medical supplies.

AUSTIN – A Texas lawmaker wants paramedics to pack more than just medical supplies.

John Wray of Waxahachie introduced a bill to allow first responders in Texas carry guns.

He believes, in less populated areas there's a chance EMS will arrive before the police and they need to be able to protect themselves.

However, not all first responders are on board with the idea.

“It would be another level of training for us, it would be another level or responsibility and also, it doesn't fit in with our mission,” Captain Darren Noak of Travis County EMS said.

EMS officials also said they are trained to diffuse a situation before it gets dangerous.
