KERRVILLE, Texas - In Kerrville, the last notes of a star-spangled concert have faded away at a day-long festival on the Guadalupe River. Tuesday offered a lot of fun in the sun at Louise Hays Park.
The people who came to celebrate Fourth of July said on this day, and every day, they are proud to be Americans, even during this time of strife in the nation’s capital.
Shanan Wagner went shopping at a local variety store for a tall ‘Uncle Sam’ hat and some sunglasses that featured a six-shooter design, so he would be ready to party.
He said the nasty partisanship in Washington is just not a factor on the Fourth of July.
“You know the hubbub doesn't mean much down here in Kerrville right now. It's America's birthday, so Happy Birthday America," Wagner said.
With his toes dangling in the Guadalupe River as he rocked in a hammock suspended over the water, Kerrville resident Chris Barker said waiting for a free concert in the shade of towering cypress trees is a great way to celebrate what makes America great.
“This is a good day to be an American and just be happy with what we've got. There's a lot of trouble out there, but there's a lot of good people out here. It feels good," Barker said.
Taune Lima reflected on freedom as she watched her children splashing at water’s edge.
“It's a good way to relax and remember that America is beautiful. Things are beautiful here, and people are kind and good,” Lima said.
Arriving hours early for a front row seat for the Robert Earl Keen concert, Jay and Debbie Rydberg slathered on sunscreen and said there is no place they would rather be.
“I love music. The music is great. It's free. I love Texas. I love free stuff. I love beer. It's all here,” Jay Rydberg said.
Organizers said this is the seventh annual freedom show for Kerrville, and they called it the biggest and best ever.
With free parking, free admission, vendors of all sorts and plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy, the “Robert Earl Keen’s Fourth on the River” was expected to attract more than 7,000 people.
