A jury deliberated for 3 hours in the case of a 19-year-old man accused of killing a woman in October 2008. The guilty verdict was read with 13 bailiffs present. Cox had threatened to create a scene.
As he was escorted out of the courtroom he told his mother he never wanted any of this to happen. He told her, I love you and she returned the saying.
Prosecutors say Quinton Cox shot 26-year-old April Phillips the Walters St. bridge. Phillips was shot multiple times in the back of the head. But the weapon was never found.
Phillips was living at Fort Sam Houston with her military husband and 2-year-old son. Her parents believe Phillips was car jacked.
Prosecutor Lorina Rummel said witnesses who were with Cox testified he was the shooter.
"In the courtroom the truth comes out," said Rummel. "There was no reason to kill April Phillips and that defendant said, 'I killed her.'"
A 16-year-old boy testified he saw Cox shoot Phillips, and said Cox threatened him not to tell anyone.
In closing arguments defense attorney Cornelius Cox said several of the witnesses admitted they were using drugs.
He said their testimony was riddled with problems.
Defense attorney Charles Bunk said the scientific evidence doesn't add up.
Pointing at Cox, Bunk said, "April Phillips was murdered, but it sure wasn't him."
Quinton Cox faces 5 to 99 years or life in prison. The punishment phase begins Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
