Parents arrested after infant found dead in east-side house fire

Baby dies in house fire, parents arrested

SAN ANTONIO -- An unattended baby was found deceased when firefighters entered an east-side home that was on fire.

According to the San Antonio Fire Department, they received a call around 8:10 p.m. for a duplex fire on the 600 block of Gulf Street.

Investigators with the San Antonio Police Department said firefighters were already fighting the fire for around 15 minutes when Terry and Shorts came running to the scene. They reportedly told authorities they had left the child "for a few minutes to go down the street."

The fire started in the back of the home, where firefighters found the dead infant after breaking in.

Police identified the baby as 1-year-old Taliyah Edwards.

The infant's parents, 25-year-old Charles L. Shorts and 23-year-old Tyler Jannel Terry were arrested in connection with her death.

The baby's parents were both charged with abandoning a child and were each being held on $20,000 bond.

People in the area have also started a memorial for the baby at the scene.
