REPORTS: Inappropriate teacher-student relations at all-time high in Texas

Student-teacher relationships up in Texas

SAN ANTONIO - The Texas Education Agency said inappropriate relationships between teachers and students in Texas are the highest since they've began recording it.

From last September through the end of August, the TEA has conducted 222 investigations into allegations of inappropriate relationships which is defined as anything from a romantic flirtation to a full blown affair between a teacher and a student. They believe one of the causes is the increased use of social media and texting between teachers and students.

"We certainly encourage the use of social media on a professional, but we're also very clear that there are limitations on how teachers, how professional educators, how staff members in our schools are to use social media," said Barry Perez from Northside ISD.

At Northside ISD all school employees are required to complete a training course about how to interact with students appropriately.

"It's our belief that every staff member is responsible for the safety of their students so that training includes a very clear definition of what constitutes inappropriate behavior," he said.

He suggest that if parents are worried about a relationship your child has with a teacher call and communicate and all allegations will be thoroughly investigated.
