A major freeway connector ramp may be closed until 5 p.m. after a big rig hauling a huge concrete beam overturned.
The accident happened around 9 a.m. at the ramp between Interstate 35 Southbound and Interstate 37 Southbound. A concrete I-beam that's about 100 feet long and weighs more than 100,000 pounds crashed thru the guardrail when the driver took the curve too fast.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was expected to recover from his minor injuries. There was a small fuel spill the fire department contained quickly.
Because the beam is so heavy, police said it will take a long time to break it down and remove it from the crash site. They plan on cutting the beam into sections and carry them from the scene using a crane that will be big enough to lift the heavy sections.
Police said they're not sure if the driver will face any charges. The approved route for the convoy was supposed to be on Loop 410. The driver said he missed a turn and was taking a detour when the crash happened.
The 18-wheeler was headed to the Texas Rio Grande Valley.
