Have a feast and grow a garden

Community working to reduce violence

Change is taking root in east San Antonio.

At Gardopia Gardens, just a few hundred yards away from where three people were shot in the last ten days, they are growing the community from the ground up.

Saturday volunteer chefs will serve a nine-course dinner here for this grassroots effort for change.

"There's a lot of crime where we are specifically and so I believe that one way to reduce crime is through community gatherings and getting to know your neighbors," Stephen Lucke, the founder of Gardopia Garden, said. "This is a great place for the community to come and serve as a hub for healthy lifestyles."

Lucke said if you can't make it to the fundraiser, they have work days in the garden every Saturday from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Lucke said volunteers are always welcome to just show up in the 600 block of North New Braunfels.
