Fugitive who slipped ankle monitor during Aug. murder trial captured

A fugitive who slipped an ankle monitor last August while awaiting a verdict for his part in a 2014 murder has been captured.

Kerry Gittens, 26, was standing trial on August 26 in the murder of Antwan Jones, 30, who was killed in November 2014. Gittens was on a lunch break when he managed to slip out of his ankle monitor.

Gittens was later found guilty of murder and sentenced to 50 years in prison. Gittens was not in custody when he vanished because he was already out on bond.

Authorities said Gittens was captured in a hotel in Katy, Tx. on February 27 and was being transported back to San Antonio to serve his sentence.

A second suspect, 25-year-old Tyree Byrd fled San Antonio following the murder. He was found by authorities in Ohio in April 2015 and extradited back to Texas.

Authorities said Jones left behind two daughters under the age of 10.
