Flu sweeps Texas, state tops flu activity ranking

Texas tops national flu ranking this season.

It's peak flu season, and this year the dreaded virus is especially bad in Texas.

Texas is one of 23 states already seeing high flu activity, and San Antonio ranked number nine last week on the Walgreens flu index, based on prescription data.

Doctor Sky Izaddoost, with the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, said her officer has seen a spike in cases the last two weeks.

Robert Dicus was one of the many visiting the doctor after his 2-year-old son’s fever peaked at 103 degrees.

"He was tired, lethargic, coughing, sneezing and had a runny nose and itchy eyes," Dicus said.

Izaddoost diagnosed his son with Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV. It has similar symptoms to the flu and can cause serious breathing problems.

"Both RSV and flu are very high right now," Izaddoost said. “We are also even seeing some strep throat."

Cases of the flu started to surface earlier than last year.

“Last year, we didn't see a lot of cases of the flu until February," Izaddoost said. “This year, it started as early as September. It has been a lot worse than it usually has been, but over the last two weeks, it's just gone really crazy and rampant.”

She said they're seeing entire families sick with the flu and strongly recommends getting the flu shot.

"Even if you've had the flu, you've had one strain of flu," Izaddoost said. “We still want to protect you against the other three."

She also advises people to call into work and keep children out of daycare if they’re feeling sick to help prevent the spread of the virus.
