Driver injured after car plunges off Loop 1604 overpass

A crash sends one man to the hospital after he drove off an overpass overnight.

SAN ANTONIO - A man is in the hospital after driving off a highway overpass early Tuesday morning.

San Antonio police say they received a call just before 1:30 am Tuesday that a car had driven off the Loop 1604 overpass above Stone Oak Parkway. When they arrived at the scene they found the car had slammed into one of the overpass pillars, trapping the driver in his car.

Firefighters had to work to free the man from his vehicle. The driver, in his mid-twenties, was then transported to University Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

Police say the driver is lucky to be alive and is continuing to investigate what caused this accident. They have not determined if alcohol could have been a factor.
