Businesses prepare for I-35 shutdown this weekend

This weekend could be a traffic nightmare for many of us in San Antonio. TxDOT is planning to shut down part of I-35 for four days over the weekend to replace an old bridge by loop 410. Eyewitness News reporter Jeremy Baker talked to business in the area

This weekend could be a traffic nightmare for many of us.

TxDOT is planning to shut down part of I-35 starting at 9 p.m. Friday all the way through 5 a.m. Monday, to replace an old bridge by loop 410.

"Its hard to get in and out of here because of the traffic that's backed up down Rittiman because of the freeway being closed," Jessica Castilleja, manager of Metro PCS on Rittiman Road said.

Andrea Clark from Insurance 4 Less next door added, "I already have people parking in front of the entrance ways and I'll be parked there waiting to get out and they will see me and they were still block my entranceway."

Castilleja and Clark work side by side off Rittiman Road on the city's northeast side. They said traffic is already hectic.

"We are going to close all lanes of I 35 starting Friday night at about 9 o'clock, and that's going to run through Monday morning at 5 o'clock in the morning," TxDOT spokesperson Josh Donat said.

KENS 5 Jeremy Baker said If you're traveling southbound you'll have to exit off I-35 at George Beach, then re-enter the highway at the next available ramp.

But if you're traveling northbound you exit I-35 at Loop 410, turn around at Binz-Engleman, and continue along northbound 410 to return to northbound I-35.

Donat added, "It sounds really confusing it's really not."

But if you're going to the Spurs game Saturday here's some good news.

"We are going to take a Spurs break between 6 PM and 11 PM while the Spurs take on the Clippers. Once our silver and black get the W we will get back at it and re-close that road and get right back to work." Donat said.

TxDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area altogether.
