An local orthodontist stepped up to help kids left out in the cold by the Medicare system.
When Medicare changed how it reimbursed dentists for orthodontic work many dentists just stopped treating kids on Medicaid.
Many of those kids got stuck in braces. That concerned one orthodontist.
"My group is concerned about tooth decay under braces that aren't being maintained," said Percy Luecke, president of the Texas Association of Orthodontists. "We think it's not safe for these kids."
Luecke took off braces for San Antonio Medicaid kids for free on Friday. They hope it will keep cavities from forming on the newly straightened teeth.
