BCSO motorcycle deputy hit by SUV on Highway 281 South

SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County Sheriff’s motorcycle deputy was hit by an SUV on Highway 281 South Thursday morning.

The accident happened around 7:45 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of 281 South and Mission Grande.

Deputy Art Garcia, 56, was in the median facing southbound while using a radar gun on passing vehicles.

Suddenly, a woman driving a SUV northbound on HWY 281 lost control and hit the deputy, according to BCSO.

"That impact of the crash was so severe that debris from the crash was thrown upwards of 70 feet," said Bexar County Sheriff, Javier Salazar.

Officials said Garcia, a 27-year veteran of BCSO, was airlifted to the San Antonio Military Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Garcia has a broken left femur and underwent surgery Thursday.

"At this point, we're still investigating what caused that vehicle to lose control and hit the motorcycle," said Captain Martin Molina of the BCSO Patrol Division.
