Police make an arrest in July 2016 bike trail sex assault case

SAN ANTONIO - An unsolved assault on a San Antonio bike trail is one step closer to being closed.

Nearly a year after the attack, police believe they have the suspect and they didn't have to go far to find him.

Authorities got a hit from a DNA databank possibly connecting the man to a crime here in Bexar County and one in Killeen, Texas.

Terrell Jenkins, 36, is behind bars for aggravated sexual assault.

Last July, a 53-year-old woman said she was walking on a bike trail near Austin Highway when a man came up behind her and dragged her into the woods.

The woman said the man raped her then shoved leaves into her mouth.

Investigators were able to collect DNA and insert it into a database

DNA from Jenkins, who is currently behind bars for a different crime, was recently taken and that DNA got a partial match for the assault last July.

Killeen police said they also got a match for the rape of an elderly woman there as well. They said, in that case, a man broke into the woman's apartment and sexually assaulted her.

Jenkins remains behind bars on a $75,000 bond.
