Airmen donate 3,000+ toys to west side church

Airmen stationed at Lackland Air Force Base are to thank for making the holidays bright for a lot of neighbors in need.

SAN ANTONIO - Airmen stationed at Lackland Air Force Base are to thank for making the holidays bright for a lot of neighbors in need.

Air National Guard members with the 149th Air Wing donated more than 3,000 toys to Last Chance Ministries. The west side church hosts a toy giveaway every year. The airmen have been key contributors to the success of the event for several years.

Along with providing so many toys, airmen will be serving up a hot lunch at the massive Christmas party Saturday.

Pastor Jimmy Robles and dozens of volunteers from his congregation spend Thursday night wrapping the gifts. Bragging on the generosity of the troops, the ministry is humbled.

“Not only are they serving our country, they’re serving our community,” said Pastor Robles.

The event is open to all families in San Antonio. While helping wrap dozens of presents, Victoria Hernandez said she is looking forward to seeing so many happy children this weekend.

“Not a lot of parents have enough money to get their children what they want and this is just a blessing that [the airmen] donated this many toys for the children,” said Hernandez.

The whole church excited to witness so much joy.

“What I really want to happen is for them to get excited and know that Jesus is there for them and that we are all there for them,” said Jake Ryan.

The toy giveaway is December 16th from noon to 4 p.m.

Last Chance Ministries is located at 404 Brady Blvd. San Antonio, TX 78207.
