COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Aggies from Texas A&M University are rallying behind a freshman student recently diagnosed with a rare cancer.
Shelby Smith, 18, created a GoFundMe campaign after learning she had olfactory neuroblastoma, a cancer that starts in the nerves and can affect your sense of smell. According to the page, Smith's mom broke the news the day she accepted a bid into the Delta Delta Delta Sorority.
"I made this GoFundMe in order to raise money so that this battle might not be as difficult as it would be trying to fight it on our own," Smith wrote on the page.
The campaign's goal was set at $50,000. As of Friday afternoon, more than 1,600 people had donated $73,543 in three days.
According to the Houston Chronicle, former Aggie quarterback Johnny Manziel donated $1,000 to Smith's goal. Current and former students also showed their support on social media, encouraging people to donate to the campaign.
