SAN ANTONIO -- A group of local veterans is holding out hope that Old Glory will be returned.

Veterans in American Legion Alamo Post 2 say a thief stole their irreplaceable American flag right off the flag pole outside of their post on the city's northwest side.

Commander Lupe Barrera said it was swiped earlier this week while flying at half staff in wake of the mass shooting in Colorado.

"It saddens me because they don't have respect for the flag nor the sacred ground that it is flown on," Barrera said.

But the flag the thief took was not just any other flag. That particular flag was once flown over Washington D.C., and was dedicated to the post by Congressman Charlie Gonzalez.

If the thief really needed a flag, Barrera said he would have gladly given him one had he just asked. Just not that flag.

Barrera said he's still holding out hope that whoever took the flag will have a change of heart and return it. He said they can just drop it in the mailbox, no questions asked.
