SAN ANTONIO -- Bexar County sheriff's deputies say they arrested a whopping 64 men in a span of nine hours during a prostitution sting on the city's west side.
That's nearly an arrest every eight minutes.
The sting, dubbed "Operation Polar Bexar," involved three undercover officers posing as prostitutes in the area of Zarzamora and Travis streets on Friday night.
Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz said they knew the area was a problem, but were surprised at the number of arrests.
"Sixty-four in one night certainly indicates that we have a problem and that's why we did it because we do get complaints from neighbors and residents," he said.
The arrests, however, will not put a stop to the problem.
The sheriff, along with San Antonio police Chief William McManus, said it will take a community-wide effort of simply no tolerance.
"If we could have arrested this problem away, we would have done it a long, long time ago," McManus said. "As I mentioned earlier, there has to be a more holistic approach."
