Are you stuck in daily traffic gridlock at U.S. Highway 281 and Loop 1604 on San Antonio's far north side? Relief is coming today.

"This is a great day," said Leroy Alloway of the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority.

Half of the multimillion dollar interchange linking Highway 281 to eastbound and westbound Loop 1604 was scheduled to open at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Vehicles travelling northbound on 281 will be able to take the ramps to eastbound and westbound Loop 1604.

Connectors allowing traffic on Loop 1604 to go directly onto southbound Highway 281 will open in early 2013.

Alloway said the project will provide relief for 25,000 motorists daily.

Groundbreaking for the project happened in March 2011. The project has cost $131 million, which is  $10 million under budget, Alloway said.

A ribbon cutting for the two new connectors was being held Thursday morning. Motorists should be able to let the rubber meet the road by evening rush hour traffic.

"When all four connectors are done, we will be giving people back 40 hours a year they won't be stuck in traffic at 281 and 1604," Alloway said.
