SAN ANTONIO -- The Texas Department of Transportation says its ramping up efforts to stop jaywalking after three pedestrians were hit and killed in San Antonio in one week.
A woman was struck and killed on Thursday morning while trying to cross Highway 90 near West Military Drive.
On Tuesday night, another woman was hit and killed by an 18-wheeler while walking on the I-35 access road near Fischer Road.
That same night, a man was struck by a hit-and-run driver as he tried to dart across Walzem Road.
"Those pedestrian fatalities could have been prevented," said TxDOT Safety Administrator Sam Aguirre.
Aguirre said Highway 90 near Lackland Air Force Base and also Fredericksburg Road are high-risk areas.
"There are laws that govern this sort of activity," San Antonio police Sgt. Javier Salazar said.
SAPD is looking toward a plan that would involve citing jaywalkers and some sort of public service announcement.
"We're looking at the enforcement and the education aspect of it," Salazar said.
Aware of the problem, TxDOT granted $12,000 to the Metropolitan Planning Organization. Money will go toward a bike and pedestrian safety awareness campaign.
