A family of four walking on a sidewalk was run over by a car on the city's northeast side because of a distracted driver, Bexar County Sheriff's deputies said.

The accident took place shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday as the family of four walked southbound on Foster Road near I-10, facing oncoming traffic.

The Cadillac lost control, hit a telephone pole and then struck the family, deputies said.

A 30-year old man, identified as Jose Beltran, died at the scene. His 3-year-old son, Eli, was airlifted to the hospital, where he later died.

Meanwhile, the 35-year-old mother, Christy Bergarra, is being treated at the hospital. She is 8-months pregnant and doctors are trying to save the baby.

Four-year-old, Adrian Beltran, remains in critical condition.

The family had been staying with Jose Beltran's mother near to where the accident happened. They had come to San Antonio from California just six days ago. They were looking for work.

The family was walking back from the Flying J Truck Stop after having an early dinner when they were struck down.

Sgt. Edward Conger with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said the 38-year-old female driver in the Cadillac may have been on the phone. They're trying to determine whether she was talking or texting.

The driver was found in the backseat of her vehicle. She had no visible injuries, but was transported to the Baptist Hospital.

Authorities will continue their investigation into the cause of this horrific accident. The speed limit in the area is 45 miles per hour.
