Tax-free weekend started Friday morning. Retailers say back-to-school sales match those of Christmas.  Shoppers are showing up with long lists of items they have been waiting to get.

Most school supplies under $100 are tax free. Clothes normally worn to school that cost under $100 also qualify, but not golf shoes or football pads.

Robert Smith a  Walmart manager said, “Backpacks are included. The ones that may not be included are in sporting goods. They also carry some backpacking kind for camping and hiking and things like that, so those aren’t included.”

Smith says some items that weren’t on the list last year, like loose leaf paper, pens and pencils,  have been added and are exempt this year.

Walmart has school lists on their web site and lists in the store. They say they expect huge crowds over the weekend.

“It’s pretty equivalent to Christmas. As far as the amount of sales that will be happening and as far as the amount of the congestiveness of the store,” Says Smith.

But no one is really complaining.
