SAN ANTONIO -- Metro Health has confirmed a third case of the West Nile virus in Bexar County.
Last week, a man was hospitalized after feeling ill. It was later determined that he had contracted the mostiquto-borne virus.
The two other cases in Bexar County were reported by the San Antonio Military Medical Center. The most serious case was an older military retiree who spent several days at SAMMC, then later transferred to a rehabilitation facility.
Assistant Metro Health Director Vincent Nathan said he expects more cases in the coming weeks but added he doesn't expect an outbreak even close to the size of the one in the Dallas area, where 14 people have now died from the virus.
"August and September are mosquito months," Nathan said. "Mosquitoes bite more then because usually there's a little more rainfall and there is more standing water."
Currently, Metro Health does not have plans to do any widespread community spraying.
The City of Alamo Heights public works department considered more aggressive spraying this year but has since backed off the idea after residents raised health concerns about the spray.
