SAN ANTONIO -- Police say a joyride in a stolen car ended abruptly when the teen suspects crashed into a ATM machine at a Walmart gas station.
Investigators said a man was sleeping in his Mazda Tribute outside of his home in the 300 block of Susanwood, near Loop 410 and Nacogdoches, when the two suspects found him shortly after 4 a.m.
They allegedly pulled him out and beat him with a stick before taking off in his vehicle.
Officers said they spotted the stolen car at the Walmart at Loop 410 and Rigsby a short time later.
The driver, who was already in the car, ran across the highway when approached by the officers. At the same time, officers said the other suspect hopped into the driver seat and sped off, although he didn't make it far.
Police said the suspect took a wide turn and crashed into a 24-hour ATM machine near the Walmart gas station. He was arrested immediately.
Officers found the other suspect hiding in a tree house in the backyard of a nearby home.
Police said the juveniles could face only robbery charges because officers have been unable to locate the stick allegedly used in beat the victim.
The victim suffered only minor cuts and bruises.
