SAN ANTONIO -- A driver was killed early Tuesday morning in a fiery wreck that halted rush hour traffic on busy Highway 90 East.

San Antonio police Sgt. Javier Salazar said the fatal accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. while police were working to clear another accident that had slowed eastbound traffic near Zarzamora.

"The smaller truck couldn't stop in time and struck another vehicle, which set off a chain reaction," he said. "Unfortunately, the smaller pickup looks like it caught fire and we have one fatality inside that truck."

The identity of the victim was not immediately available.

Police said a total of six vehicle were scattered on the roadway from both accidents.

Another vehicle briefly caught fire after the collision and burned on the right side of the roadway, while the pickup truck was engulfed in flames for nearly 10 minutes near the median.

Traffic was tied up for most of the morning as police and firefighters worked to clear the roadway.
