From crime to infrastructure problems, some residents living in south San Antonio were speaking out Thursday night, hoping to make their neighborhood safe again.
Thursday’s meeting was the last of three held by District 3 councilwoman Leticia Ozuna. The biggest area of concern is the Roosevelt and South Presa corridor, where a wide variety of crimes and public safety issues are obvious to many.
“I’ve watched it go down the last couple of years where people are afraid to go out at night, they don’t want to ride their bike along the river and it’s a quality of life issue for everyone involved,” said resident Brady Alexander.
The first two meetings were utilized to discuss the issues concerning residents, and Thursday’s meeting was set to try to brainstorm on actual solutions.
Residents and business owners broke into small groups with different city staff to come up with those solutions.
Residents might not see immediate results, but councilwoman Ozuna is confident this strategy of community involvement will work in the long run.
“What we found was this same approach was used on the west side and there was a lot of success there,” Ozuna said. "We aren’t making up this model. This model comes from a very well-tested trajectory.”
Ozuna said she will take all of the feedback and hope to get back with residents in a few months with an actual plan that will help make the area safer.
