SAN ANTONIO - With construction delays preventing the opening of two new elementary schools in the North East ISD, next week hundreds of students will be starting the school year on a campus not their own.
Students scheduled to attend Las Lomas Elementary and Vineyard Ranch Elementary will spend the first semester at one of five of the district’s other nearby elementary schools.
Jane Jensen is the principal at Wilderness Oak Elementary. Her school has made room for all the kindergarten through second grade students that were suppose to attend Vineyard Ranch.
"I'm happy for them to be here as long as needed," said Jensen.
While the two schools will share one building, they’ll operate separately – even starting at different times to accommodate the revised school bus schedule.
The counseling center at Wilderness Oaks has been converted into a front office for the Vineyard Ranch staff, and rooms that would have been used for Spanish and art class are now classrooms for the Vineyard Ranch students.
Jensen said the overcrowding at her school was one of the reasons the two new campuses are being built, so she is used to having to make accommodations.
"We are use to having a lot of children to love and that's the way I look at it,” she said. “It's like we have two families - a blended family."
