It was a melancholy day Friday as members of congress left Washington DC and President Barack Obama signed an order activating deep spending cuts.
“It’s just dumb and it’s going to hurt. It’s going to hurt individual people and it’s going to hurt the economy overall,” said Obama.
The Defense Department said military operations in Texas could lose at least $1.7 billion by October. That would mean millions of dollars lost at Joint Base San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston, Lackland and Randolph.
The sequester also means more than 80,000 unemployed Texans could see their benefits drop and government furloughs and layoffs could begin. The list goes on and on. So does the blame game.
“They’ve allowed these cuts to happen because they refuse to budge on closing a single wasteful loophole,” said Obama.
While the president blames the GOP, republican Lamar Smith points the finger right back.
In a statement he said, "I am disappointed that President Obama allowed sequester cuts to take effect. His decision places partisan politics above the best interests of the American people."
Democrat Pete Gallego said there are both Republicans and Democrats that are willing to reach across the aisle, just not enough to actually make it happen.
“There are those of us who are very interested in talking among Democrats and Republicans to come to a reasonable objective. The difficulty is we’re not yet in the majority,” said Gallego.
