On Thursday the San Antonio City Council formally approved an ordinance to name the greenway trails the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System.

Mayor Howard Peak was the first to conceive of putting flood zones along city-owned creeks into use by developing a ring of hiking and biking trails. He was an employee of the Planning Department at the time. Later as council-member and mayor Peak helped the city acquire properties to make that vision a reality. It began with the purchase of Walker Ranch Park.

He has worked to develop walking and biking trails throughout the city.

About 38 miles of greenway trails now surround the city, but there is funding in place for a total of 79 miles of trailway.
