Arturo Garza proudly served in the U.S. Army. On Friday, he was at a Veterans Service Center where the day started with a moment of silence.
Garza said he will always remember and think about the 13 soldiers killed at Fort Hood.
"Being a veteran, I'm really sorry, and we pray for the victims who were shot. It is sad that it happened on a military installation," said Garza. "I always lived on base when I was in the military. Back then, there was nothing to worry about, but nowadays you don't know."
Veterans have complete confidence the military is on this and will do everything it can to make sure something like this cannot happen again. Victor Ponce served in the U.S. Navy and said he expects the 13 victims will always be honored and remembered as heroes.
"They got killed on American soil. It's sad," Ponce said. "They should be given some kind of recognition."
Daniel Kenney is a former Marine who said it's important to realize such an isolated and bizarre shooting can happen anywhere. He said honoring those killed and wounded is most important.
"They're still heroes in my book. Anyone who serves their country is a hero," Kenney said. "These things happen, and in today's world nothing surprises me."
