SAN ANTONIO -- A San Antonio police officer is in critical condition after being struck by a pickup truck Sunday evening while assisting at an accident scene.

Police on Monday identified the officer as 28-year-old Jonathan Esquivel, a five-year veteran.

Police Lt. Chris Benavides said Esquivel was placing flares to direct cars around a previous, unrelated car accident around 6 p.m. Sunday on the access road at Loop 410 near Evers Road.

A truck approached the scene and swerved to avoid a police car, sending him straight into the officer's path, Benavides said. Esquivel was thrown by the impact across several lanes.

The officer was rushed to University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

The driver of the pickup, Shad Christopher Modesett, 40, was questioned by police and as of Monday morning has not been cleared of criminal charges.

However, police said he was arrested overnight on an unrelated traffic warrant. Court records show he was released after paying $100 toward a $300 traffic ticket.

Investigators are reviewing video from a patrol car at the scene.

Police said Modesett was not under the influence of alcohol.

Traffic was backed up for miles on Loop 410 westbound Sunday evening.
