Police were busy interviewing a witness to a Friday morning armed robbery of a southeast-side gas station.
The witness said he was filling up his truck at the Murphy's Express gas station in the 2500 block of SE Military around 2:30 Friday morning when he saw a Hispanic man in his early 20s grab some automotive products then walk up to the clerk and steal the wallet from her purse.
He said he watched as the suspect climbed into a brown 4-door car.
Police said the witness, who was driving a street-sweeper truck, took it upon himself to follow the suspect. But once the suspect caught on that he was being tracked, he reportedly shot at the witness' truck several times, hitting the it once on the bumper.
The witness said he followed a 9-1-1 dispatcher's instructions to stop trailing the suspect.
Authorities are screening surveillance video of the crime in hopes of catching the thief.
